Mayan Pyramid in Palenque
Pleasantly surprised by the grand Mayan architecture that still survives in Palenque, Chiapas, México. An entire city once inhabited by thousands now exists in the forests of Chiapas, including several huge pyramids. It was extremely busy around Christmas time with Mexican tourists but it was still awe inspiring as you took in the ruins and considered its amazing history.
It was made an even stronger experience as we later went to the anthropology museum in Mexico city and were able to view a former king's mummy and his jade burial mask which was recovered from Palenque decades before.
While not as impressive as the Mayan city of Tikal further south in Guatemala, its still absolutely worth visiting and a treasure of Mexico and Mexican history.
